Vitamin C functions primarily to form collagen, the primary protein used to make connective tissue and form scar tissue, and is needed to form bone, and cartilage. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant which protects all cells from oxidative damage. Research has shown that vitamin C protects the body against heart disease. It is essential to proper wound healing, and has shown benefit for use in treating exercise-induced asthma. Most importantly, it is now known that vitamin C is critical to proper immune system function. Infection and inflammation rapidly deplete vitamin C from the body. Constant replacement is needed in order to maximize immune function and overcome infection.
Therapeutic Uses
- Boosts immune functions
- Necessary for wound healing
- Helps prevent cataract development
- Decreases risk of cardiovascular disease
- Reduces blood pressure
- Decreases histamine levels (useful in treating allergies)
- Reduces capillary fragility
- Counteracts asthma (reduces airway spasms)
- Helps overcome male infertility
- Used in treatment of cervical dysplasia
- Helps protect diabetics against long-termcomplications by lowering sorbitol level and reducing glycosylation of proteins
- Protects against sunburn and its effects
- Increases integrity of connective tissue, assisting treatment of bleeding gums, bruising, and arthritis
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Supplementation may aid in wound healing and burns
- Protects fat-soluble antioxidants (e.g., vitamin E) from oxidation
- May play a role in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease, especially in combination with vitamin E
- May decrease severity and lower risk of knee pain in osteoarthritis
- May reduce risk of irritable bowel disease
General Information
Calcium ascorbate, sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid are three forms of Vitamin C.
The human body cannot produce Vitamin C. The scientific community considers this to be a genetic fault as almost all other mammals produce their own Vitamin C. In fact when under stress other mammals production of vitamin C increase 200 times.
Vitamin C helps the body promote a vigorous immune response to viral infections.
Vitamin C is essential for the production of adrenalin. Poor adrenal function can initiate anxiety, fatigue, energy loss and sleep difficulties.
Vitamin C is vital for:
- First-line defence against - oxidation and free radical damage, both of which are known to initiate many of the most common diseases - cancer, heart disease, age-related eye disease and other chronic (long term) conditions.
- Maintenance of healthy connective tissue and bones (a deficiency often leads to bleeding and poor wound healing)
- Normal metabolism of cholesterol and the production of cortisol by the adrenal gland
- The production of collagen (found in both skin and bones) and the metabolism of various brain chemicals
- The synthesis of the hormone noradrenalin, which has powerful effects upon pulse rate and blood pressure
Vitamin C may support the body's natural mechanism of preventing or reducing inflammation by up-regulating the immune response, thus reducing the discomfort normally associated with infections.
Side Effects/Toxicology
Vitamin C is considered nontoxic; excesses are excreted by the body. High doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhoea, and nutritionists state that this side effect is useful in assessing an individual's tolerance and optimal daily allowance for proper tissue saturation. Diarrhea, gas, or other intestinal disturbances are harmless and reversible with lower dosing. Although the literature is full of speculated warnings, no harmful effects even from long-term "megadosing" have been observed.
We've been using and recommending Clinicians Hi-Dose Vitamin C as source of Vitamin C for many reasons:
- It is a powder form and is easily absorbed
- The dose can be varied for all ages. Infants to elderly
- It is a cost effective way of utilising vitamin C.
- The feed back from our customers is amazing.
When our body is under stress from immediate life stresses to infection our bodily sources of vitamin C can be depletes within 2 to 3 hours. So when we have a viral infection from a cold, influenza, shingles, glandular fever, chicken pox, cold sores or any viral infection our stores are depleted very quickly.
So the secret to dosing with vitamin C is to use it frequently through out the day.
We recommend to our adult customers to take about 1g (1000mg) of Vitamin C every 2 to 3 hours when showing signs of infection. The sooner we start dosing the better the response. If our bodies are full or saturated with vitamin C we would experience an upset tummy, wind, or diarrhea (bowel tolerance). The sicker we are the more vitamin C we require to get to bowel tolerance.
With severe viral infections we recommend to dose 1 to 2 g of vitamin C every 2 to 3 hours or by adding vitamin C to our water bottle and drink frequently until we get to bowel tolerance then reduce the dose so we do not experience discomfort. Once the viral symptoms have disappeared then over then next few days then reduce the dose by half each day and stop.
Some people may dose once or twice daily with vitamin C for the antioxidant effects or other therapeutic actions of vitamin C. Suggested product would be Clinicains Family C or Nutralife Ester C with bioflavanoids.
Vitamin C is safe to use in children, when pregnant and breastfeeding.
